Sylvie Debevec Henning Story

Story of the Block: Sylvie Debevec Henning

I’m not sure that this is really a scarf from China. It is a silk scarf printed with an ancient Chinese scarf text that my mother bought for me at the Louvre during one of her many visits to Paris, the city where she was born.

My mother loved beautiful objects. Before she came to the United States in 1947, she had purchased a number of etchings, faience and other objets d’art; she managed to bring many of them to the US with her and they decorated our working-class home in Cleveland. I inherited many of them when she died in 2002 at the age of 91. She was also an artist in her own right. Including this scarf in the collection of Asian textiles gives me the opportunity to incorporate into our quilt several of her paintings.
