ECU Summer Programs
India
This program will explore some of the relationships between religion and culture in a living context. Students will visit a variety of key cultural and religious sites in India, including the Jama Masjid, the Bahai Temple, the Taj Mahal, the Ganges River and various Hindu Temples in Varanasi, Haridwar, and Rishikesh, as well as a variety of Buddhist sites throughout the Dharamsala region. These sites are sacred to Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and Bahais. Through readings, on-site lectures, and their own experience, students will learn the significance of these locations. They will also discover how adherents to these different faiths encounter their own sacred territory and how their cultural forms intersect with these spaces. In Rishikesh, students will participate in a two-day yoga training course at a Hindu ashram. In the Dharamsala (population: 10,000) region in northern India, students will participate in a two-day Buddhist meditation training program. The group will spend two days doing volunteer work at a NGO called Tong-len. This organization is a Buddhist service organization with the primary mission of serving internally displaced Hindu members of the community. Students will also visit various Tibetan cultural institutions including the Tibetan Medical and Astrological Institute, the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives, The Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts, Norbu Lingka, and various monasteries. China
This program offers students an opportunity to gain their first hand experiences with the construction industry and construction education in China. Activities include visiting ongoing construction sites across sectors and major projects completed in recent years; panel discussions with industry professionals, students and faculty members from major academic programs; as well as visiting historical sites and buildings. The students study construction as a profession in a global context and maintain a competitive edge in the globalization of the construction market. The program will examine the construction practices of China and the US using the comparative method of study founded by Sir Banister Fletcher’s History of Architecture. The course will examine selected projects and construction sites in China from an experiential and interactive approach, i.e. visiting the actual constructed project and given a guided study with professionals from the construction and architectural professionals and by use of CD’s (construction documents). Thailand
This complete program provides an opportunity for students to combine international travel with an intensive experience in research and studio art. Today’s weaving is one of the cultural heritages, and an art form that is still practiced in all regions of Thailand. In this course, we will research and learn textile weaving in Isan (Northeast) Northern, and Central Thailand, in addition to indulging in the rich culture and history of Thailand.
